FGA!
A week of Fun, Goodbyes, .....
This last week has been a bunch of fun starting with our friends the Clums, followed by the Geiger-Putras and ending with the Schmitt/Ernst contingent! We only have a picture of the Clums to share at this moment.
I also have a picture of Kerry and me on the pier!
Things seem to be moving right along in Cajamarca as I just received word from my new
superintendent that our new house is getting furnished
tomorrow. There is also a schedule for our transition over the course
of next week. It is hard to believe that next week at this time we
will be in the airport boarding our plane to begin our new life of
international travel and education.
and Anxiety!
We are feeling a bit nervous about our belongings getting through customs in Lima. Not that we have anything we shouldn't have, just that we hope that the process isn't long and complicated. Doing it all in Spanish will be the real complication. So in a perfect world, Delta will take all of our boxes and check them as extra baggage and charge us $200.00 a piece. The boxes will show up in Lima when we get there and we will put them on some carts, press the magic customs button and get a green light which will allow us into the main Lima airport. We will then get picked up by our driver who will take us to Cargo City where we will check our stuff on to Cajamarca.
The way it will probably happen is that we will get stopped in Lima at customs and have to go through some confusing process because of the value of our items and pay a duty. Which will be fine as long as it doesn't take too long and in the end we end up with all of our stuff. Who knows... This will be the beginning of the adventure!
Today, Joel comes up and Kerry's family near the end of the week. Maybe some golf on Wednesday...... Fore!!!!!
Homeless
Wow! So here we are 12 days away from moving and I am living at the cottage! Kerry and I had a harried last day of packing, selling my car, and driving up to the cottage. Feelings of uncertainty are beginning to crop up and actually feel pretty good. After moving into the cottage we had to unpack all the boxes that we brought with us and had to re-sort and decide what we would upgrade at the cottage with things that we would not have room for in our bags. The cottage received a nice upgrade.
The other thing that became evident is that we will not be bringing much with us to Peru. Space is tight and we will be purchasing a lot more than we originally anticipated. This is not necessarily a bad thing, it just is a fact of moving abroad. Next time we go about this I am sure that we will be using a moving company. In hindsight, we could have brought a lot more with a lot less work had we gone in that direction. In reality, I think we needed to do it this way because we really didn't know what to bring and this forced a serious pare down.
So the schedule is as follows:
No pictures on this post as I am at the Markesan Public Library because my computer is packed up.

So the schedule is as follows:
- See friends and family at the cottage through Saturday July 12th.
- Go to my sister's house for a bon voyage dinner and sleep over.
- Go to Brunch on Sunday.
- Go to Kerry's family's house for a bon voyage dinner, repacking and final sorting.
- Get a ride to the airport for the actual move.
- 7 Action Packers
- 4 large suitcases
- 2 carry on suitcases
- 1 guitar box
- 1 computer box
- 2 personal item bags

Last day at the Landmark
Transition Two
We have been busily packing and driving things up to the cottage this weekend. It is also the first time that it is beginning to sink-in that we will not be living in Milwaukee anymore. I am not sure that moving out of the country is sinking in yet, but at least not living in Milwaukee is beginning to sink-in. It's interesting that the sinking-in period is happening in these little steps.
The line-up for today is:
- Go pick up our last bits of mail at my mom's house and have coffee with her.
- Move our boxes and suitcases out to Tommy's house to store for the drive to the airport in two weeks.
- Pack up the suitcase for the cottage.
- Finish cleaning here at the apartment.
- Sell the truck. (It sold!)
- Say goodbye to the East Side and Lake Michigan.
- Drive to the cottage!
It will be nice to get to the cottage because almost all of the preparation work will be completed for the move and we will get to relax with friends and family for our last two weeks! Maybe I'll try to catch a musky before we leave!
All packed up for the kayak trip!
So I have been up being the Minocqua , Wisconsin for the past week. The weather is been very rainy and continues to be so.
Chris is on his way up to the cottage and will spend the evening here. Tomorrow morning we leave at seven to catch our shuttle that will take us to where we put in for a kayaking trip.
A look at the weather confirms that we will have a wet three days of camping and kayaking.
Here are my supplies all packed up and waiting to get loaded into the car for the final trip to the shuttle.
We will put in at 9 mile landing on the Flambeau River and ride that to Flambeau Adventures, LLC about 50 miles downstream.
Tomorrow we plan to go about 15 miles, Tuesday we will go about 20 miles, and Wednesday we will finish with two class 2/3 rapids before pulling out and returning home.
I will race home and pick up my niece Shannon for a Six Flags adventure on Thursday. Friday and Saturday we pack and Sunday we head up to the cottage for our final two weeks in United States.

Going Up North
One last stop "Up North" before I leave
Haskell Lake - Van's Place (childhood vacation spot)
Crawling Stone Lake - Tom's Place (Where I'm heading today)
I am heading up north in a matter of minutes.... I will do the up north thing until next Sunday when I leave to go kayaking on the Flambeau River for two days.
Packing up for Peru
We are beginning to make some serious progress in our packing. We have 7 action packers and two big suit cases packed up so far which is 450 pounds of our stuff. (Pictured are the action packers, the suitcases are in the guest room) Yesterday we took 5 of the packers and the two suitcases down to the exercise room and weighed them on the scale, each on is 50lbs. We are finding it is the weight that is the issue not the size of the box that is the challenge.
We have two more large suitcases, two carry-ons and a guitar case and a computer box to go for a total of 15 pieces of baggage.
Wahoo!!!!!!
Off to Distil tomorrow night for the destination dinner!!!
Final full week at the Landmark
So here we are in the pseudo home stretch. This will be my last full week at the Landmark in, "the deluxe apartment in the sky....sky...sky". Monday I will head up to Minoqua with a friend of mine for a week and then do some Kayak camping with another friend. I will return here on Wednesday, June 26th in the evening. The following day I am off to six flags with Shannon and then it is final packing weekend at the Landmark for the move to our cottage in Markesan, WI.
In preparation for the move and my absence which my lovely wife Kerry agreed to, we have begun the final packing of the action packers of which we will need more. Thus far, we have four action packers and two large suitcases packed. We have two carry ons, two more large suit cases and one action packer left to pack. We are thinking that we will need two more action packers to fit all of it. It still seems like we have a lot left.

June Dairy Days Pedal Pull
Shannon and Kieran participated in the Markesan June Dairy Days Peddle Pull.
Shannon somehow snuck into the same weight class as Kieran and after a not so successful run over the last few years managed to bring home a second place trophy!! Congrats Shannon!!!
I coached them both on to their successes and received my trophy later during the Dairy Days Parade!
