March Plans, Plantar Fasciitis, and the Wait for Spring

As winter winds down (or at least pretends to), March plans are taking shape. At the end of March, I’ll be heading to Austin to visit my friends Pete and Dolores, while Kerry is making her way to Florida to see Archana and Tim. We’ll both be chasing a little warmth—though at this rate, we might not need to go far.

In the meantime, I’m still dealing with this never-ending bout of plantar fasciitis. I stopped walking in January, hoping rest would help, but the pain keeps hanging around. My doctor tells me it could take up to seven months to fully heal. Seven months. Egads. While I wait for my foot to get its act together, I’ve started going to the gym—because if I can’t walk outside, I might as well try to raise that heart rate in other ways than walking.

Things are warming up sooner than expected, but I’m not fooled. We’ll probably get one last storm just to remind us who’s really in charge. Until then, I’ll be resting my foot, counting down to my trip, and keeping an eye on the forecast.

Retired!! Welcome Back!!

Hello and welcome (or welcome back) to my Untethered blog, Kerry has hers here. If you're joining me from other social media platforms, I’m glad you found your way here.

After a bit of a break, I’m bringing this blog back as my primary place to post about our pastimes, passions, and places we explore. In my quest for a simpler, more streamlined life, I’ve decided to step away from most social media and focus on more meaningful, mindful connections.

As part of this shift, I will be deleting my Instagram and Facebook accounts due to increasing censorship by big tech. I’m making a conscious choice to step away from social media and minimize my reliance on these platforms. While I know it’s impossible to disconnect completely, my goal is to reduce my big tech footprint as much as I can. This blog will be my space to share updates on my own terms—free from filters, algorithms, and outside interference.

Happily retired, I now have the freedom to follow my footsteps wherever they lead—wandering to new wonders, revisiting favorite retreats, and relishing the road at a relaxed, reflective pace. There are exciting adventures ahead, and I look forward to sharing them with you here.

The Long Break

I really love the long winter break that the South American school schedule affords. It also makes the school year nice and obvious. We start in February and end in December. So last school year was very easy to understand it was the 2014 school year, not the 2014/15 school year.

That might all change as I look for a new school to work in for the 2015/2016 school year or if I land a particular job I might remain on the southern hemisphere schedule in one of the schools of which I am looking. At the moment things are very up in the air and fluid.

This year's break brought us home for Christmas, Panama, and Lima before coming back here for two weeks before school begins again. Hopefully the job scene clears up for me in the next couple of weeks. Here are some pictures of the places I went on my summer vacation....

Trip Home

Well I made it back to Cajamarca yesterday. I was very excited to return and feel like it's my home. Interestingly, I found it more difficult to leave my family and friends this time around, unlike during winter break. I think it has to do with realizing that we have spent a year away and this is actually is going to be my life for a long while. It is not an experiment. It also connects with the amazing feeling I had when I got back to my simpler life in Cajamarca. I have emotionally accepted that this is my home. Not necessarily Cajamarca, but living abroad, traveling, and experiencing the world from a different perspective.

Don't get me wrong, I love my family and friends and enjoy every minute experiencing their presence. I will continue to miss people and long for my family and friends that can't be replaced. I am however, falling into this lifestyle very easily and feel like I am on the correct course.

Surprisingly we didn't use our "good" camera at all and only have a few pictures from the I-phone and from others. Here are some of the highlights from my trip. I am sure Kerry will have a different perspective and of course different pictures when she returns in a couple of weeks....
